What is SUP?

Stand Up Paddle Boarding - Healing Through Water

The Waikiki boys began using outrigger canoe paddles with surfboards in the 1960’s, as a way to keep an eye on tourists and to get better pictures as beginners made their first attempts at surfing the waves.

SUP is a surface water sport where the surfer uses a paddle to move through the water while standing on a surfboard. Standup paddle boards are basically extra-long and buoyant surfboards.

Stand Up paddle boarding is frequently called SUP and is an ideal sport to learn on flat bodies of water and provides the sensation of walking on water. The main difference between surfing and SUPing is that the paddler doesn’t need a wave. A standup paddler can quickly and easily travel across open waters and rivers.

Our choices in the way we wish to heal ourselves are vast and many people are finding new paths to re-establishing full health. Stand Up Paddle boarding is one of them, with it’s therapeutic and rehabilitation benefits there is a healing that takes place when you can connect with outdoors, nature and the elements.
I have found SUP to be Therapeutic for my mind, calming, a total stress relief and also good to build up my overall fitness which in turn builds strength and supports my immune system. I personally suffer from lower back pain and paddle boarding has strengthen my core and in return supports my back and relief from sciatic nerve pain.
SUP therapy works well with other treatments and many therapists, and life coaches are referring their clients so when they leave their session they have something else they can do to help themselves. I've even had neurosurgeons recommend seeking out Stand Up Paddle boarding to rebuild equilibrium after brain surgery.
SUP is an ideal re-habilitation exercise as it is non weight bearing, especially good for any knee/ ankle injuries. You are also able to go at your own pace, you can sit, stand and even lay on the board.
There are many reports about how the mind can be healed and comforted when spending time in nature, combine that with physical movement out on the water and you have all the factors that contribute to a unique and highly effective form of therapy.
